AN EXCERPT FROM A FELLOW ROTARIAN, KATHRYN SMITH:
I am a Rotarian from Anderson, SC and the author of a forthcoming book that has a strong polio and Somerville tie-in. It is the first biography of Marguerite LeHand, the private secretary of FDR for 20 years. She was his right-hand-woman, de facto White House chief of staff and helped him establish the polio rehab center in Warm Springs, Georgia. She was also one of Somerville's most famous residents, and owned a house on Orchard Street. The book has a lot about the war on polio in it, and a very rare photo taken in Warm Springs of FDR in a wheelchair, which I think Rotarians would be very interested in, and quite a bit about Somerville, too.
On Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m., I will be speaking at Porter Square Books about "The Gatekeeper." Would you please include some information about this in your newsletter?
